Your Stone Kitchen Island Options

Natural stone kitchen islands are the most popular kitchen island designs out there today. There are three types of stone that are most commonly used for kitchen island countertops: limestone, granite, and marble. If you are someone who is interested in purchasing a new kitchen island and would like to learn more about the different types of natural stone you can use, then read on! It is important to know the advantages and disadvantages of each in order to find the stone that works best for you and your kitchen.

Limestone is a popular choice for those who want a lighter-color natural stone on their kitchen island. If you need something that is beige, white, or light gray, then limestone is a good choice. Of the three types of stone, it also has the least amount of graining so it provides a very clean, smooth look.  Nevertheless, limestone is more porous than either marble or granite, which is why it is more common for showers and floors. It also stains more easily so if your kitchen is in constant use and might see tons of grease, then limestone is not the choice for you.

The second choice for countertops are the granite kitchen islands. Its appearance is darker and has more grains that that of limestone, however, it is much less porous. Another beneficial feature of granite is its extremely high level of durability; granite is second only to diamonds in terms of hardness. Its dense grain makes it resistant to stains and it can handle extreme heat very well. Granite is one of the more expensive options; however, it is a great investment for someone who makes the most out of their kitchen.

Marble is the most popular option for stone countertops. It has a classic, attractive appearance and comes in a wide range of colors. Like granite, marble is a very durable material, highly resistant to heat and does not scratch or crack easily. A disadvantage to marble is that it is mined all over the world so it might be hard to match your countertop later if you want to make additions to your kitchen with the same color marble.
