If you think kitchen islands come pre-fabricated and are cookie cutter pieces of furniture, do we have a surprise for you! There are so many variations of kitchen islands that we could spend all day telling you about them. But we won’t do that. We know you’re busy, and we’re busy, so let’s just cut to the chase. Here are the main types of kitchen island designs that you can put in your unique home:
1. Built in kitchen islands. This is the more customized type of kitchen island, and you can decide what materials you would like it to be made out of, how you want the cabinets to look, and what surface would work for you. You can go with an all wood kitchen island with a wood butcher block surface, of you can go with a wood base and a stainless steel or stone countertop. The options are really endless when it comes to what you’d like in a built in kitchen island, but all these options can start to cost you. Remember, the more customized a home improvement item is, the more it is going to cost, and you will can either hire a handyman to install your new island or do it yourself, but make sure you know what you’re doing if you install it yourself.
2. Butcher block kitchen islands. With this type of island, you can choose from one that is built in, or you can go with a free standing model. The free standing model is popular, as it is very much like a little kitchen work table, but it is made with specialized hardwood laid in tightly woven strips for that “butcher block” cutting surface. If you don’t need cabinet storage, or you are short on floor space in the kitchen, then a table butcher block may serve better in your home. If you would like the cabinet storage for your almost endless supply of kitchen utensils, gadgets and dishware, then you may opt for the cabinet base with the specialized butcher block surface.
3. Kitchen Carts. These carts are great for those who like to entertain, or those people who really want a kitchen island for food preparation, but don’t really have the room in the kitchen for a permanent fixture. These are like mobile kitchen islands, or islands on wheels! If you don’t have a lot of extra room in your kitchen for a permanent island fixture, these kitchen carts may be just what you need. You can wheel it into the kitchen when you need that extra counter space or cutting surface, and when you’re not using it, you can wheel it on out to the dining room, living room, or the some convenient nook where it’s out of the walkways.
No matter which kitchen island design works for you, you will find that you immensely enjoy having this handy helper in your kitchen! |
